"To see life ... to see the world; to eyewitness great events." With these words, founding editor and publisher Henry R. Luce began "A Prospectus for a New Magazine," laying the foundation for what would become America's first picture magazine. From its premiere issue on November 23, 1936, LIFE Magazine fulfilled this ambitious vision with unprecedented photographic coverage-from the intimate drama of daily life to the spectacle of world events. More than 2,100 issues of LIFE, featuring tens of thousands of images, were published during the magazine's 60-plus year history as a weekly and monthly publication.
But LIFE Magazine is not just a prized piece of American cultural history. This iconic publication has recently re-launched under the guidance of the TIME magazine group with the goal of producing at least six premium magazines a year, some of which are accompanied by hardcover book versions. Recently named "One of the 100 Brands that Changed America," LIFE is still a powerful and compelling brand among today's collectors and consumers. In fact, LIFE's recent book, ONE NATION, which chronicled the events of September 11th, rocketed to #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and remained on the list for five months.

Beyond the photographs printed in past, present and future LIFE publications, The LIFE Picture Collection is home to millions of photographs, many rarely or never before seen in print.
The extraordinary images in The LIFE Picture Collection were taken by some of the finest photographers of our time. Images by important historic photojournalists, such as Alfred Eisenstaedt, Margaret Bourke-White, and Dmitri Kessel are available, as well as photographs from the respected Mansell Collection of rare historical images. Theirs are the images that capture, expose, and interpret: recorded with perfect timing or conceived through the photographer's unique ability to see something special where the rest of us see the obvious or the ordinary.
